aircraft demonstration squadron---the U.S. Air Force
Thunderbirds. Restaurateur Mark Peel serves as guest judge.
For tonight's quickfire challenge, the chefs were asked to create a potato dish that's out of this world, with the winning chef receiving immunity in the elimination challenge. The judges' least favorite dishes were made by Eli (too sweet), Ron (overcooked and bland), and Jesse (too spicy). The judges' favorite dishes were made by Jennifer, Ash, and Ashley. Ash and Ashley both got lucky here--Ash intended to make Sweet Potato Ice Cream (can I just say, ewww?), but the ice cream maker wasn't working. Instead, he presented the dish as a custard and the judges loved it. Ashley had a melt down about Preeti throwing out her water accidentally, but her dish still impressed the judges. But the winner was Jennifer. She can't seem to do anything wrong and has a real chance of winning this whole thing (go KA). Mike whines about Jennifer winning, saying the judges are clearly playing favorites. Um, how does a guest judge play favorites? Just man up already and get over yourself.
For the elimination challenge, the chefs were asked to prepare dishes for 300 airmen at Nellis Air Force Base. The chefs decide that Jennifer should be the overall manager, since she has immunity. She's up for the challenge. The remaining chefs divide into seven groups of two, with each chef preparing a dish. When the chefs arrive at the base, they're surprised to learn that they have to cook in the airbase's kitchen, which doesn't have pots and pans, or even stoves. Also, the kitchen has bottled spices and canned food they have to use to prepare their dishes (oh, the horror!). Jennifer keeps everyone on track, telling Hector and Jesse to stop talking about whatever they're talking about and focus on the food, and putting tape on the ovens to keep the teams organized.
Overall, it looks like the troops enjoyed the fancy dishes. The judges liked most of the dishes too, but had some issues with a few dishes.
The top teams tonight were Michael V and Mike, and Eli and Kevin. Eli and Kevin made pulled pork with a traditional southern potato salad. The judges really liked the pork, and the troops raved about the potato salad. Mike made a Greek shrimp salad. I've never had a Greek salad with shrimp, and the judges weren't impressed with it either. The judges thought the salad lacked flavor and the shrimp were not cooked well. Mike was not pleased. With Mike's dish, Michael V made a piece of bacon on a lettuce leaf? Seriously, I'm not really sure what it was--bacon served like porkbelly on romaine? Something like that. The judges really really loved it, and thought Michael was a genius. And Michael V (JE) is the winner of the challenge. Of course, his only comment (shown on TV anyway) is that he's now tied up with his brother in winning elimination challenges. *eye roll*
The judges ask Mike to send back Laurine, Preeti, and himself. Mike is livid. Even though his dish sucked, he thinks because he teamed up with Michael, he should be safe. The judges call him on his behavior, and he backs off a bit, saying he's just really mad at himself. Whatever. But the judges really hated Laurine and Preeti's pasta salad. I thought it looked good, but apparently, despite its colorfulness, the salad was bland. Laurine tells the judges that she didn't think it was a winning dish, but they needed a vegetarian dish. Then she tells the judges she just forgot about the competition. Gail is not happy about that. Like last week, Preeti thinks her dish was actually good. Tom hates that she can't tell a good dish from a bad one (and he clearly hates her name too, because it's stupid). And the loser is....
Preeti bird.
(I've been wanting to put bird behind her name every time--this was probably my last chance, so I'm doing it. That's right, I'm a rebel). And with that, this weeks loser is..... me (KCar). So, go me. Tom Delay and Preeti bird (twice, yay!)--I guess I'm now officially done talking the smack.
Next time on top chef, the chefs have some sort of french cuisine challenge. Oh la la! And the loser of the quickfire challenge will go home too! Tune in!
Project Runway tomorrow night.
